Autism Acceptance Month – 2024

Autism Awareness MonthApril is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to celebrate the differences and contributions of autistic people, and promote inclusion and self-determination.

Autism is a spectrum of developmental conditions that affect how people communicate, interact, and perceive the world.

Autism affects about 1 in 54 children in the US, and millions more around the world, with diverse strengths and challenges.

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day, a UN-sanctioned event that aims to raise global awareness and support for autism research and advocacy.

The Autism Society of America launched the first national campaign in 1972, and since then, many organizations and communities have joined the movement.

The Plainfield Park District opened its first playground geared toward those on the Autism spectrum in late 2023 at Van Horn Woods East. The play area features a main structure with some traditional play elements including:

  • Ground-level, under-deck play spaces
  • Sphere for sensory interaction
  • Spinner
  • Rocking rider
  • Sensory dome with various small spaces and interactive elements
  • Communication board designed in collaboration with Northern Will County Special Recreation Association
