Rain Doesn’t Deter Local Cub Scouts from Planting Trees

If any of the members of Cub Scouts Pack 82 in Plainfield ever decide to apply for a job with the U.S. Postal Service, they can cite their experience working in inclement weather as proof of their determination to always get the job done.

That’s because the heavy rain over the weekend didn’t deter Pack 82 or their parent volunteers from completing a tree planting project on May 15 at Mather Woods.

Scout Master John Hantak received tree saplings for his scouts from the Plainfield Park District’s Arbor Day/Earth Day giveaway in April. The District also donated the remaining saplings to the troop for their project.

Hantak said that after a year of remote meetings, his group of 20 scouts, most of whom are from Central Elementary in Plainfield, were just starting to ease back into meeting again in person.

In addition to planting trees at Mather Woods, the Cub Scouts also made “seed bombs”—a clot of compost, clay, and seeds—at the park’s shelter that can be used to spread new plantings of wildflowers.

Pack 82’s volunteer work capped a busy few weeks of volunteer activity around the Park District centered on the celebration of Earth Week and Arbor Day.

Boy Scout Troop #19 completed a brush clean up at Kelly Park and Troop #50 from Lockport whose members camped out at the park for the weekend also collected trash at Mather Woods. Girl Scout Troop #75603 completed a cleanup of Norman Greenway and resident Amy Kish kicked off the volunteer clean up efforts, picking up trash a couple of weeks before Earth Day, also at Mather Woods, in early April.

All of the volunteer efforts help the Park District in its ongoing mission to be good stewards of natural resources, and preserve open space for our residents.
