Active Adult News – Newsletter

Keep up with the latest news for active adults in the Plainfield Park District. You can receive the newsletter by email, pick up at the Plainfield Township Community Center, or by mail for a small fee. For more information call the Plainfield Township Community Center at 815-436-2029.

Weekly Drop In Programs


  • Face coverings must be worn regardless of vaccination status starting July 31 and until further notice (learn more HERE)
  •  Social distancing required
  •  Hand sanitize before game playing
  •  Bring your own beverage with lid or straw. No food or snacks allowed at this time.
  • Wipe down game pieces and hard surfaces that you used before you leave for the day.

All Bridge and Pinochle players are welcome to drop in and play a few friendly hands. 

Fridays from 9:30am to 11:00am
BYOS (Bring Your Own Supplies) to this drop-in time.  All  are welcome whether you knit, crochet, make jewelry, paint ….Bring what you are working on and join in on the fun!

Fridays from 10:00a-12:00p
Come join this enthusiastic group of mahjong players.  Most participants know the game but stop in and check it out!

Intro to Vegan Cooking for Adults

Ages 18+
Looking for a fun class with your friends, or your significant other? You’ll be delighted at the vibrant and complex flavors that practically leap from each dish as you prepare your multi-course menu in a vegan cooking class. Varieties include both familiar vegan fare as well as fusion, and much more. Work with the Chef Donna B., who is eager to share her expertise to provide you with wholesome recipes that can be savored by everyone at your table. Bring your chopping knives and your appetite ! Cantigny Garden Tour

Ages 40+
Enjoy a delightful afternoon at Cantigny Park!  We will start our day with a garden tour of the grounds. After the tour we will have lunch at the Le Jardin restaurant.  Choose from Chicken Salad or Turkey & Provolone Sandwich or Caesar Salad.  After lunch tour the 1st Division Museum, explore other gardens, the tank park, visitors center and gift shop. Spectrum Singers Active Adult Choir

Ages 40+
Would you like an activity that improves your mood, keeps your mind strong, and improves your quality of life? Join a rewarding new group, The Spectrum Choir. The choir will provide a welcoming community for active adults, both men and women generally age 55, who enjoy the arts. This choir welcomes ALL adults: lifelong singers, complete novices, those who have never tried singing and want to try something new, singers who have been on break from singing, anyone who enjoys singing. The choir will be led by a professional choral director/vocal instructor and will be accompanied by a professional pianist. There will be a wide variety of songs to learn and rehearsals will include exercises in vocal technique. A performance is planned for the end of the session. This course is created for any amateur photographer who understands the basics of photography but who wants to take their skills to the next level. This workshop includes hands-on weekly photo assignments and professional feedback on your photos. Bring your camera and manual to class. Alcohol Ink Wine Glass Painting

Ages 21+
Don’t miss this fun class as you paint 2 wine glasses using alcohol ink. Glass is an excellent surface for alcohol inks, because it allows the dyes to move and flow freely for creative blending and mixing. Alcohol ink dyed glass creates a stained-glass-like finish. No experience required! The fee includes all supplies and a pair of wine glasses to take home! KW

Alcohol Ink Holiday Ornaments

Ages 21+
What a beautiful way to decorate your Christmas tree, winter wreath or a great gift idea! Every ornament is unique because you get a different look every time. Participants will make 3 ornaments to take home the evening of the class. The fee includes all supplies. Ornaments will be on display at the Plainfield Township Community Center. Long Grove Vintage Christmas

Ages 40+
Join us to visit historic Long Grove in early December. All the shops will be festively decorated, and you will have the opportunity to find a variety of unique gifts for those special people on your shopping list. Lunch and shopping will be on your own, and there are so many options to choose from! (trip includes motor coach transportation, 4 hours of your choosing, and a coupon booklet for the local shops).

Holiday Lunch

Ages 50+
The Plainfield Park District and Plainfield Township will co-host the annual holiday luncheon for all active adults. A catered lunch will be served from noon to 1pm, with entertainment to follow to add to the fun! Everyone must register by filling out a Park District registration form with their payment. The deadline to sign-up for the luncheon is December 8. KW

AARP Smart Driver Course

This class developed by AARP is designed to enhance the confidence and knowledge of the participants in order to prevent accidents. Participants will receive a student manual along with a certificate of completion which can be used to receive a discount on auto insurance. Questions are encouraged throughout the sessions and new laws and regulations will be covered. The cost is $15 for AARP members or $20 for non-members payable the first day of the class.  For more information call the Plainfield Township Community Center at 815-436-2029.


Rules of the Road

Become more familiar with road signs, test questions, new laws, and gain confidence needed to pass your driver’s exam. Rules of the Road is sponsored by the Secretary of State office. Pre-register by calling (815)436-2029
