May 8, 2020 Statement from Plainfield Park District Executive Director

Dear Plainfield Park District Families and Residents –

We are at the point in the year where school is ending and summer is just around the corner. Normally the Plainfield Park District would be in an organized fury of getting ready for a variety of activities including day camps, swimming lessons, softball leagues, and outdoor special events. Typically, as the weather becomes nicer, our parks and playgrounds would be filled with kids running and playing and many participating in games of tennis, basketball, baseball, and soccer.

During the current time, we wanted to provide you with an update of the Park District today.  Currently through the Executive Order, all of our District facilities, playgrounds, athletic courts, dog parks, outdoor restroom facilities, and skate parks are closed.  Through review with local enforcement and guidance of the Illinois State Police (ISP) all of these facilities fall under closure.  We are closely following and adhering to all state and federal rules and regulations and reviewing all recommendations as they pertain to public parks and recreation activities and facilities. We are awaiting further direction from these agencies in order to make appropriate decisions on which facilities /activities we will be able to resume this summer.

A few weeks back our 2020 Summer Activity Guide was delivered to your homes.  Many of these recreational opportunities were developed and planned prior to the Current Executive Order and the Restore Illinois Phased Plan.  Unfortunately, many of these events will be altered, delayed or even cancelled. The Park District is still very committed to our mission of “seeking to enhance lives through quality recreational opportunities.”  Our recreation team has been diligently preparing an e-recreation platform of virtual programs that launch Monday, May 11, 2020 offered through the next four weeks.  We are also working toward a second session of e-fun in June.  Additionally, we will always have our social media contests and activities.

The Recreation Team is also working toward summer activities, to be prepared as permitted under the Restore Illinois Plan.  We are currently evaluating how we can hold summer classes and Day Camp, while adhering to and following all regulations and recommendations in efforts to offer them safely.  We are looking for direction from the Governor’s office and the IL Department of Public Health (IDPH.)  Registration is open on-line to secure your space for the programs, if we are capable of proceeding with them.  Should at any point the Park District not be able to operate a program in the name of safety, refunds will automatically be processed.

Additionally, the Plainfield Park District Board of Commissioners will discuss and possibly determine the status of the Ottawa Street Pool 2020 season at our upcoming Board meeting on May 13. 2020 at 6p.  This meeting will be a virtual meeting and constituents may follow the audio of the meeting through the link that can be found under the Board Info and Meeting tab on our website, www.plfdparks.org.  We are following guidelines from public health officials and leading authorities in the field of aquatics to determine the opening of the facility.

Park shelter and facility rentals are currently not accepting any reservations prior to June 15, 2020 with the understanding that any reservation may be cancelled pending Park District adherence to the restoration phases.  We understand that this may cause an inconvenience and are closely monitoring all situations.

There are other forms of outdoor recreation that we are encouraging individuals to enjoy.  Park District trails and green spaces are there for your recreational opportunities.  Fishing is allowed in Park District ponds.  Persons, 16 years and older, are required to have an IDNR fishing license and follow our catch and release requirements. Kayaks, canoes, and SUP’s, with no more than 2 persons per craft, are also allowed on the DuPage River.  We have two structured launch points at Eaton Preserve and Riverview.

We are in this together and everyone needs to do their part. We are here for our residents.  We look forward to and are hoping to get back to that “normal” soon!  On behalf of the Park District Board of Commissioners and Team Members, we thank you for your patience and understanding.  Please continue to be safe and stay healthy!

Take Care,

Plainfield Park District
