Plainfield Park District Virtual 5k Race Embracing the “New Normal”

The Plainfield Park District is inviting runners and walkers to embrace the new normal this spring with its first ever virtual 5k race in June.

The “Plainfield Park District New Normal Virtual 5k” starts June 14 and participants will have one week to “to walk, jog, run, or crawl the 3.1 miles to the virtual finish line” said Recreation Manager Dan Schaffer.

Schaffer said that the virtual format allows residents of all fitness levels to take part and to log their miles from a treadmill at their home, walking the trails at their local park, or even strolling around their neighborhood.

Racers will receive their first training progression on May 17th to help them get ready for the big race he said.

Schaffer said that participants who use Park District trails should be sure to maintain social distance of at least 6 feet from their fellow racers.

“We think our residents are ready to get out of the house and get active and hope this will give them the motivation,” he said.

A schedule will be sent June 13th for racers to pick up their race shirt and bib and Sunday, June 14th, the virtual race will begin.

Participants will have one week until Sunday June 21st at 5p to complete their 3.1 miles and submit their times to the Park District.

Winners will be announced online the week of June 22-27.

In addition to the 5k race, the Park District has unveiled its first slate of E-Recreation programs. A complete list can be found on the Plainfield Park District website, plfdparks.org, under “E-Recreation.”
